Seriously Guys, Get People to Clear their Cars

I was driving to work today and passed a Toyota Highlander with, I kid you not, a 3 foot high snowdrift on the roof of their vehicle. I have no idea how this is physically possible but it was there.

Kinja'd!!!

( not actual car...but ridiculous nonetheless )

I also came across a Rav4 with a nice, even distribution of snow atop their car (as well as what looks to be the remainder of a snowbank covering the front).

Now, aside from both vehicles being Toyotas they had something in common: idiocy.

Let's backtrack to last Friday when I was leaving work and watched a Pathfinder hit a pothole and shake about 6 inches of snow from the roof to the windshield. THE DRIVER SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES! This not only caused more snow to slide forward but caused a chain reaction of brake slamming. Thankfully, no accidents occurred.

Kinja'd!!!

I looked outside and there's more snow coming now for me so get word out there to clear the snow off your vehicles. At high speeds, it can fly off backwards and cause trouble for other drivers. When stopping, slowing down or hitting a bump it can cause trouble for you...and then other drivers. Overall, it is not safe.

It would feel super satisfying to just push that mound off the car.

Speaking of push, I did my good deed for the day by pushing a car out of a snowbank. Three strangers getting together to push a fourth stranger's car is actually really satisfying given how miserable everyone seems to be.

We don't get snow like that here, but even with a few inches you'll see people doing that - and if the police see them, they'll get a ticket which brings a hefty fine and points on their license. I believe people have been charged with some fairly serious offences, on occasion: dangerous driving, having an unroadworthy vehicle, and so-on. And that's without even causing any accident.

I keep a couple of tow straps in the truck just for this reason.

Pretty much nothing has been enforced here...pretty insane given how easy it would be to 1) up the safety game and 2) put some revenue into the towns to CLEAR THE DAMN SNOW.

Took backroads today because main roads are choked (down lanes) with vehicles and the FoST was scraping the entire time. The only pavement is in the wheel ruts -_-

I have a slackline in my car at all times now. Originally it was a gift from my gf in the summer but then I realized it had a 2-ton tension limit and could be used as a 50 ft tow strap if needed!

Worst I saw was a pickup without a tailgate and a full bed of snow (he had cleaned off the roof and front). I was being cagey and was a few cars back in a different lane because I figured some shit was going to go down. We're all headed up a hill in traffic at around 10-15 mph and some space opens in front of him then he gooses it. The whole contents of the bed come out in a big chunk which the car behind him plows into at speed making a giant snow explosion causing all the other folks to slam on brakes leading to general chaos. Good times.

About the enforcement, I asked one of my neighbors, who is a state trooper, about this. He said he's written a few tickets for it but it's usually a while after the snow when most cars have already been cleared by just driving around (aka someone who left their car parked for days after the snow until the roads were perfectly clear again and still didn't clean it off). Usually the guys that pull traffic duty soon after the snow fall are too busy responding to accidents and pulling people out of ditches to do preemptive enforcement. Apparently his shifts after a snowfall consist of literally driving around from one accident site to another for 8-10 hours and those calls take priority over everything other than reckless driving that is egregious enough to warrant a criminal charge rather than just a moving violation.

I sometimes wonder if people who do that are playing a game. Like how like how long can I balance a book on my head. Except with snow. Endangering others who are not part of the game. I'm sure the police would love to provide some disco lights for their little jaunt.

That's absurd.

And I assumed that was the primary concern but the snow hasn't fallen since Monday. The one from Friday I mentioned in the post was at least 4 days. Drives me insane.

Back window was 100% covered, but yeah, you can still see most of the body panels.

i had to go from duxbury to cohasset to hanover yesterday. Its a trip that should only have taken 1 hr MAX but it took abut 1 hr 45m. A couple snow flakes fall and some people start thinkin they need to drive 20 mph in a 45. The slowest people were either in camry's or luxury SUV's. I saw i think 3 people stop and have snow fall on thier windsheild.

Should take me 20 minutes to get to work. If I waited in the line of cars on main roads it would take almost an hour. Back roads took me 45.

But, like last week, handbrake turns!

Passed a driver of a Volt the other day whose entire back window was covered. I mean, come on. Not even any line from the defroster poking through. You would think people in MI would know better....

I recently had a revelation that 90% of the driving population has no idea that their vehicles have a defrost mechanism for their rear windows.

I wonder how they can function on a daily basis.

To be fair, it was a Volt. Maybe he didn't want to waste the range........more likely he was just stupid.
